The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District is interested in good design for everything:
- public art,
- architecture,
- historic preservation,
- signs,
- landscaping,
- streetscaping,
- street furniture (benches, bike racks, bollards, etc.), and
- sustainability.
Landscaping
The Landscaping Team tends to 350 tree boxes, five national parks, and one DC park - making them greener, cleaner, and far more attractive. Triangle Park is becoming a neighborhood asset with its 32 new trees planted in 2009, thanks to a grant from Casey Trees. In 2010, we planted 15 trees on 3rd Street, thanks to another grant from Casey Trees. And in autumn 2011, we planted 15 more trees round the neighborhood.
Streetscaping
In 2008, the L Street streetscape was completed in preparation for the opening of CityVista and Safeway, and then in 2009-10, the 4th Street streetscape was completed. The long-anticipated reconstruction of K Street between 7th Street and 3rd Street will begin in the spring of 2012. The streetscape project will encompass new paving, sidewalks, streetlights, and plantings. The project is expected to cost $9 million and take 18 months to complete. The K Street streetscape will transform Mount Vernon Triangle into a shopping and dining destination with a linear park running down both sides of K Street. Sustainability
The Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood has several green initiatives in which all Triangle residents and businesses can participate. Besides recycling and LEED Certified buildings, MVTCID has two beehives on its roof, and we donated a beehive to the Walker Jones School for children to learn about bee husbandry. We also are encouraging residents to put out bird feeders, bird baths, fountains, and birdhouses to accommodate our feathered friends.
