SUMMARY:"Prints and Works On Paper" at HEMPHILL
DESCRIPTION:Ron Adams\, Benny Andrews\, Romare Bearden\, John Biggers\, Elizabeth Catlett\, Robert Colescott\, Allan Rohan Crite\, Aaron Douglas\, Sam Gilliam\, Palmer Hayden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Norman Lewis\, Lois Mailou Jones\, Alison Saar\, Charles Sebree\, Renée Stout\, James Lesesne Wells\, Charles White\, and Hale Woodruff. \nThe 19 artists presented in Prints & Works on Paper worked from the mid-1930s through as recently as 2014.  While the work spans almost a century\, it was made within the shared social and political context of the Black experience in America. These artists did not perceive a line where activism ended and art began. Believing that pictures could make a difference\, they were invested in advocating for justice\, empowerment\, and community through education; the intentionality of creating editioned prints in a workshop setting reflects this dedication. Printmaking facilitated a wider distribution of their messages\, allowing artists to be deliberate about connection and reaching a larger audience. Imagery portraying a rich social life offered viewers positive self-representation\, verity\, and aspiration for the future. The private collection of 38 works passionately assembled over a 30-year period\, is honest in content and impressive in technique\, both captivating the audience and effectively conveying the artworks’ significance. By boldly broadcasting their identities while the art world was systematically prejudiced\, the artists in Prints & Works on Paper documented a difficult past and visualized a brighter future. \n\n\nThe artists in Prints & Works on Paper are included in permanent collections across the globe including\, the Museum of Modern Art\, the National Gallery of Art\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the National Museum of African American History and Culture\, Tate Modern\, The British Museum\, Afrika Museum (Netherlands)\, the Instituto Politécnico Nacional\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden\, and the Baltimore Museum of Art\, among others.

SUMMARY:Viva Abejas at dLeña
DESCRIPTION:dLeña by Chef Richard Sandoval is excited to announce the return of its annual Viva Abejas campaign this spring. From Tuesday\, March 21\, through Sunday\, April 23\, guests are invited to indulge in the earth’s harvests at the Mount Vernon Triangle modern Mexican concept. \n  \nOne in every three bites of food depends on bees for pollination. Similar to last year\, Chef Richard Sandoval aims to celebrate this integral part of the food cycle with a holistic approach to food\, signature activations\, cultural education\, philanthropy\, and more. New this year\, Chef Sandoval is taking his philanthropic approach a step further by authoring his first children’s book\, which is now on sale. Viva Abejas is a study into sustainability and the food cycle\, highlighting the importance of pollination and conservation for early readers and bee enthusiasts alike. 100% of the book proceeds directly benefit two organizations: the Akumal Cultural Foundation\, providing a free after-school program and children’s library in Akumal\, Mexico\, and the World Bee Project’s World Hive Network\, the first global bee health platform to the world’s bee hives to a single network using AI technology. \n  \nChef Richard Sandoval has developed food and beverage menus that demonstrate the importance of bees while highlighting Pachamama\, the Incan goddess of Earth\, planting\, harvesting and fertility. dLeña will feature a few of these themed menu items including the enchiladas doradas ($25) with a Mexican calabacitas stew\, honey-bell pepper sauce\, queso fresco\, crema\, and corn tortilla\, the Brazilian Bee ($16) with Sao Paulo Cachaça prata\, coconut-infused honey\, grapefruit\, and lemon\, and the Honey Lavender Margarita ($16) with Milagro Blanco Tequila\, lime\, honey\, lavender\, créme de violette\, and triple sec. Those withstanding from alcohol will enjoy the Ritual de la Habitual ($8)\, made with zero-proof Ritual Tequila Alternative\, Seedlip Grove\, key lime\, pineapple\, and vanilla-infused honey. All cocktail and mocktail orders will feature wildflower seed packets so guests can bring a token home and plant flowers to directly help the bees.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Open Mic hosted by Dwayne B
DESCRIPTION:Dwayne B! aka the “Crochet Kingpin” is a homegrown DC native poet\, activist\, break-dancer\, and fashion designer. He is one of the hosts of DC’s longest running open mic series\, Spit Dat\, as well as a member of the Busboys and Poets hosting team for the 5th & K location. \nIn addition to featured readings at every Busboys and Poets location\, SAGAfest Iceland 2015\, Spirits and Lyrics NYC and Manassas\, Woolly Mammoth Theater\, and the C2EA “We Can End AIDS” march\, Dwayne’s short form poetry prowess led him to win the Best Haiku Award at the 2011 National Underground Spoken-Word Poetry Awards (NUSPA). His work to increase HIV awareness through spoken-word garnered recognition from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation\, BBCAmerica\, the Discovery Channel\, and The Washington Post. \nUltimately\, his goal is to force his audience to feel. He tends to meet goals. When not documenting his life through poetic meter\, he can be found on the metro making scarves and hats\, or singing karaoke. \n* * * \nFor two hours\, audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers\, open mic rookies\, musicians and a different host every week. Expect to be moved\, expect a packed house\, expect the unexpected\, but above all come with an open mind and ear. \n$5 Cover. No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event. \nSeating is available on a first come\, first seated basis. No saved or reserved seats are allowed. \nFailure to check-in within 30 minutes of advertised start time may result in a forfeiture of seats.

SUMMARY:HumanitiesDC Culture Series: Transgender Histories with Darby Hickey
DESCRIPTION:How have the changes in D.C. over the past several decades been experienced and influenced by transgender individuals and communities? In 2021\, Darby Hickey with support from the DC Oral History Collaborative sought to explore this question through an oral history project featuring the voices of those who witnessed the transformation of the city firsthand. She interviewed eight transgender elders in D.C.\, mostly Black women\, to document their life stories and perspectives of the past 60 years. \nIn this next HumanitiesDC Culture Series event\, Darby Hickey\, along with project assistant Tessa Jelani\, and a panel of the narrators (interviewees) will discuss the journey\, the motivations\, the importance\, and the themes of this collaboration\, accompanied by selected clips from their full interviews (available in the People’s Archive at the DC Public Library). Panelists will also discuss the stories they contributed\, share what it meant to be interviewed\, and reflect on the history they have made. Come for stories about legendary nightclubs of yesteryear\, resilience and organizing in the face of violence and hate\, the importance of roller-skating\, and the power of family whether chosen or blood. \nWe’ll conclude the program by turning to the audience\, inviting folks to either ask questions or share their own experiences relevant to the topic.
