His work to increase HIV awareness through spoken-word garnered recognition from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation\, BBCAmerica\, the Discovery Channel\, and The Washington Post. \nUltimately\, his goal is to force his audience to feel. He tends to meet goals. When not documenting his life through poetic meter\, he can be found on the metro making scarves and hats\, or singing karaoke. \n* * * \nFor two hours\, audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers\, open mic rookies\, musicians and a different host every week. The proceeds from the sale go to support the nonprofit\, Turning the Page which works to provide opportunities for parents to actively participate in their children’s education. \nMVT CID has also partnered with Comedy Bonfyre to assemble eight DC-based storytellers\, comics and poets to recite their original work in Milian Park from 10:30am-12:30pm. Read more about the performers below: \nGina Brown (@ginanicolebrown) \nGina Nicole Brown is an actor and storyteller that uses TV\, Film\, and Stage to bring words and characters to life. Currently\, you can see her in the Netflix docuseries\, “The Principles of Pleasure”. She is a writer and an actor for the New York City sketch comedy team\, “A Series of Unfortunate Folks\,” and can be seen in several national commercials\, films\, and other theater productions. \nMarlena Chertock (@mchertock) \nMarlena is the Communications Specialist\, Water at World Resources Institute. She is also the Co-Chair of OutWrite\, Washington\, D.C.’s annual LGBTQ literary festival. She also serves on the board of Split This Rock\, a national network of socially engaged poets. \nMarlena has two books of poetry\, Crumb-sized: Poems (Unnamed Press) and On that one-way trip to Mars (Bottlecap Press). She writes about chronic pain\, disability\, sexuality\, and science fiction and regularly moderates panels at literary conferences\, facilitates writing workshops\, and performs poetry at open mics and reading series. \nAmbi (@ambidoescomedy) \nAmbi is D.C. based comedian\, producer and professional hype woman. She is the founder and advisor of the Hysterics\, University of Maryland’s women and non binary comedy group. She is the founder and producer of Comedy Bonfyre\, a D.C. based comedy production. She has opened for Nikki Glaser\, Aparna Nancherla\, Steph Tolev\, Ashley Gavin and others. She has worked as a marketing representative for Improbable Comedy and Story District. \nCasey Catherine Moore (@caseycatherinemoore) \nCasey Catherine Moore is a multi-disabled\, bipolar\, bisexual writer\, educator\, and activist. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of South Carolina with a focus on Latin poetry and women’s and gender studies. Her writing centers\, dis/ability and mental health\, gender and sexuality\, LGBTQ+ rights\, educational equity\, and other social justice issues. \nCal Larkin (@caleigh.larkin) \nCaleigh Larkin is an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland pursuing a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice\, as well as a minor in Creative Writing. They are a second year student at the Jimenez-Porter Writers House\, authoring several short stories and poems which she hopes will be refined into a collection within the next few seasons \nRegie Cabico (@regieguy) \nRegie Cabico is a spoken word pioneer having won The Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam and later taking top prizes in three National Poetry Slams. Television credits include 2 seasons of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam\, NPR’s Snap Judgment & MTV’s Free Your Mind. Cabico received the 2006 Writers for Writers Award from Poets & Writers for his work teaching at-risk youth at Bellevue Hospital. He is the lead teaching artist for Poetry Out Loud and has recorded several asynchronous videos for the National Endowment for the Arts and Poetry Foundation. \nPaul Mooney (@whitepaulmooney) \nPaul Mooney is a comedian and musician in Washington DC. They specialize in musical and alternative comedy\, utilizing storytelling\, presentations\, and artifacts. They host the monthly non-traditional comedy showcase Alley Cat\, which takes place at DC’s best-kept secret\, Dwell. They also play with the band Cecil and Delilah and as a solo artist. \nDiana Veiga (@dianaveigatells) \nDiana Veiga is a gifted storyteller who brings truth\, wit and insight to the page and on the stage. She loves to observe the lives of ordinary people and their everyday experiences and uses them to create stories that exhibit humor and beauty in the seemingly mundane.
