SUMMARY:"Her Own Happiness: A Novel" by Eden Appiah-Kubi at Busboys and Poets
DESCRIPTION:Maya Davis is living in paradise until her apartment\, her career\, and her dreams fall away in a horrible and dramatic fashion. Suddenly she’s packing her life into two suitcases and heading back to her parents’ home in Maryland\, scrambling for a plan B. Happy thirty-first birthday\, Maya. Right beside her is Ant\, Maya’s best friend. While she’s returning home\, Ant’s leaving his home for the first time. Even though he moved away to start his own adventure\, Ant can’t seem to separate himself from Maya—and he’s not sure he wants to. \nThinking practically for once\, Maya makes her top priority finding a career—or at least a job with health insurance. But when she’s drawn into the orbit of Emme Vivant\, the influential girlboss decides Maya has potential. Suddenly there are new contacts\, new clothes\, and the possibility of a shiny new future that could make this move home worthwhile. But is Maya finally in control of her life\, or is she losing it? Just as Ant’s platonic feelings for Maya deepen\, his best friend in the world seems to be moving on without him. \nIn this tender and vibrant novel\, Maya learns that finding the right path might not matter as much as finding herself—and who’s beside her on the journey. \nEden Appiah-Kubi and Hawa Jalloh are joining us on the Busboys stage to celebrate HER OWN HAPPINESS. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event\, and the author will be signing following the program. \nThis event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm\, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of HER OWN HAPPINESS will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is IN PERSON and will NOT be livestreamed. \nWe ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books \nEden Appiah-Kubi\, author of The Bennet Women\, has been putting her spin on classic stories since third grade. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Open Mic hosted by Dwayne B
DESCRIPTION:Dwayne B! aka the “Crochet Kingpin” is a homegrown DC native poet\, activist\, break-dancer\, and fashion designer. He is one of the hosts of DC’s longest running open mic series\, Spit Dat\, as well as a member of the Busboys and Poets hosting team for the 5th & K location. \nIn addition to featured readings at every Busboys and Poets location\, SAGAfest Iceland 2015\, Spirits and Lyrics NYC and Manassas\, Woolly Mammoth Theater\, and the C2EA “We Can End AIDS” march\, Dwayne’s short form poetry prowess led him to win the Best Haiku Award at the 2011 National Underground Spoken-Word Poetry Awards (NUSPA). His work to increase HIV awareness through spoken-word garnered recognition from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation\, BBCAmerica\, the Discovery Channel\, and The Washington Post. \nUltimately\, his goal is to force his audience to feel. He tends to meet goals. When not documenting his life through poetic meter\, he can be found on the metro making scarves and hats\, or singing karaoke. \n* * * \nFor two hours\, audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers\, open mic rookies\, musicians and a different host every week. Expect to be moved\, expect a packed house\, expect the unexpected\, but above all come with an open mind and ear. \n$5 Cover. No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person.
