SUMMARY:HumanitiesDC Culture Series: Transgender Histories with Darby Hickey
DESCRIPTION:How have the changes in D.C. over the past several decades been experienced and influenced by transgender individuals and communities? In 2021\, Darby Hickey with support from the DC Oral History Collaborative sought to explore this question through an oral history project featuring the voices of those who witnessed the transformation of the city firsthand. She interviewed eight transgender elders in D.C.\, mostly Black women\, to document their life stories and perspectives of the past 60 years. \nIn this next HumanitiesDC Culture Series event\, Darby Hickey\, along with project assistant Tessa Jelani\, and a panel of the narrators (interviewees) will discuss the journey\, the motivations\, the importance\, and the themes of this collaboration\, accompanied by selected clips from their full interviews (available in the People’s Archive at the DC Public Library). Panelists will also discuss the stories they contributed\, share what it meant to be interviewed\, and reflect on the history they have made. Come for stories about legendary nightclubs of yesteryear\, resilience and organizing in the face of violence and hate\, the importance of roller-skating\, and the power of family whether chosen or blood. \nWe’ll conclude the program by turning to the audience\, inviting folks to either ask questions or share their own experiences relevant to the topic.

SUMMARY:BENGHAZI | A Busboys and Poets Books Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Author Ethan Chorin was one of a handful of American diplomats posted to Libya in the wake of US rapprochement with Colonel Gaddafi in 2003. Six years later\, he was in Benghazi when the US mission came under attack\, killing US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Stevens had invited Chorin to the mission for dinner that night\, and the two were to have met the following day. \nDespite 10 sets of Congressional hearings\, a deep dive into Hillary Clinton’s emails\, and the trial of two suspects (acquitted of the most serious charges)\, many of the burning questions Americans originally had about Benghazi remain\, at best\, incompletely answered. This is largely because the fusion of two Benghazi narratives to partisan identity left little room for update\, revision\, or re-assessment\, even after the immediate fog of battle had cleared. 10 years later\, that’s changing. \nIn BENGHAZI!\, Chorin puts the attack and the scandal in their broader political and historical context\, sorting out fact from ‘fake news’. Understanding Benghazi\, he argues\, is no less relevant today than it was in 2012\, for the attack and multi-year scandal left a profound mark on American politics and foreign policy\, and suggest several key areas for policy reform. \nTo tell this story\, Chorin draws on his own jarring experience during the Benghazi attack\, his expertise as a former diplomat and scholar of Libyan history\, and more than 250 interviews with Libyan insiders\, eyewitnesses\, and a Who’s Who of US officials\, on both sides of the aisle. \nDemocrats and Republicans agree on little when it comes to Benghazi\, but both sides are likely to find themselves feeling vindicated by some of Chorin’s revelations and conclusions\, while strongly contesting others. \nDr. Ethan Chorin is joining the Busboys stage to discuss this new book release. He will be joined in conversation by Prof. Bradley F. Podliska\, author of the just-released “Fire Alarm\,” an insider analysis of the deliberations of the House Benghazi Committee. This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm\, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of BENGHAZI will be available for purchase before and during the event. Please note that this event will not be livestreamed. \nWe ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books.

SUMMARY:RED CLAY SUZIE | A Busboys and Poets Books Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss storytelling inspired by true events growing up in the Deep South. \nAuthor Jeffrey Lofton writes the coming-of-age story of Philbet\, a gay\, physically-misshapen boy in rural Georgia\, who battles bullying\, ignorance\, and disdain as he makes his way in life as an outsider—before finding acceptance in unlikely places. \nFueled by tomato sandwiches and green milkshakes\, and obsessed with cars\, Philbet struggles with life and love as a gay boy in rural Georgia. He’s happiest when helping Grandaddy dig potatoes from the vegetable garden that connects their houses. But Philbet’s world is shattered and his resilience shaken by events that crush his innocence and sense of security; expose his misshapen chest skillfully hidden behind shirts Mama makes at home; and convince him that he’s not fit to be loved by Knox\, the older boy he idolizes to distraction. Over time\, Philbet finds refuge in unexpected places and inner strength in unexpected ways\, leading to a resolution in the form of a letter from beyond the grave. \nJefferey will join the Busboys stage to celebrate and discuss their new release. They will be joined in conversation by Clay Smith. This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm\, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of RED CLAY SUZIE will be available for purchase before and during the event. Please note that this event will not be livestreamed. \nWe ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books.
