DESCRIPTION:The Beholder \nJulie Wolfe x PAN \n  \nBook Event & Signing \nHEMPHILL Artworks \nNovember 23\, 2024 \n11 am \nHEMPHILL is pleased to announce Julie Wolfe’s newest publication in collaboration with Pan & The Dream\, The Beholder.  Please join us on Saturday\, November 23\, 2024\, for the book event & signing with artist\, Julie Wolfe. \n  \nWe remember Rococo by its trifles: rose-coloured macarons\, powdered cheeks\, everything tied up in bows. We think less of the fear that trembled beneath this surface\, the blistering friction of their glossy world pressed up against the air of unrest outside. It appears\, as the mirror of history reflects Rococo back to us\, that the tender and sickly sweet detail of the period stood at odds with its gruesome end. But when Robespierre walked through the wreckage of the monarchy with murderous lust\, onlookers reported that the buttons of his coat were engraved with miniature golden guillotines. \n  \nIn The Beholder\, Artist Julie Wolfe and PAN partnered with a collective of photographers\, writers and artists working in a wide range of disciplines to tell the story of the Rococo era as a reflection on today\, excess\, carelessness\, political unrest and increasing wealth inequity. Within the book\, one will find those that position themselves in this choreographed interplay\, that live and move in a world of fiction\, and express the strange passion for self-escape that is at the heart of the Rococo period. \n  \nThis large format book presents a trove of curiosities through lift out\, full page spreads that hold their own rich meaning. But together\, and especially as they are partially concealed by folding\, one finds an even more enchanting conversation awaits. The artwork and imagery and the relationships to each other become at once half of themselves and something else entirely when bound together in this way. A physical and metaphysical meeting in the middle that tumbles back and forth\, teasing a universe of appreciation if one simply turns the pages and wishes to see. \nThe Beholder will be available for purchase for $125. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, October 26\, 2024\, the final day of RUSH BAKER IV: Landscapes\, for a gallery Q&A with the artist\, Rush Baker IV and curator\, Camille Brown. \nRush Baker IV (American\, Born\, 1987) received a BFA from The Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in 2009 and an MFA from Yale University in 2012. He was recently awarded the 2024-25 Grant Wood Fellowship at The Grant Wood Art Colony of the University of Iowa\, which will culminate in an exhibition in Spring 2025. Baker’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, and is represented in numerous private and institutional collections\, including the International African American Museum\, Charleston\, SC\, The Phillips Collection\, Washington DC\, and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Baker lives and works in Hyattsville\, MD. \nCamille Brown is Assistant Curator at the Phillips Collection. Brown has held curatorial positions at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She holds degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans and New York University. DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC – HEMPHILL is pleased to announce the exhibition RUSH BAKER IV: Landscapes\, opening on Saturday\, September 14\, 2024\, from 4 – 7 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through October 26\, 2024. \nRush Baker IV’s abstractions interleave the visual ephemera of Civil War-era photography\, maps\, and print media with layers of pigment\, resin\, and plaster in a collision of translucent and solid materials. Underlying Baker’s plastic surfaces is visual data sourced from depictions of the Civil War era battles of Charleston\, Atlanta\, and Gettysburg. Over the last decade\, Baker has addressed socio-political themes through abstraction\, and abstraction itself through a reassessment of influences and materials. DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC – HEMPHILL is pleased to announce the group exhibition\, BELKIN · CALDWELL · SHULL\, opening on Saturday\, July 13\, 2024\, from 4 – 7 p.m. The exhibition will remain on view through August 24\, 2024. \nSophia Belkin uses dye painting\, embroidery and textile collage to create dynamic compositions that reference natural processes. Her work is inspired by the lush\, teeming\, swamps in the Gulf South and the wetlands in the Mid-Atlantic. The paintings explore the interconnectedness of the environment and consider verdant futures for our ecological landscape in the face of uncertainty. Belkin earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012 and lives and works in Baltimore\, MD. She has exhibited at Dinner Gallery\, New York\, NY\, Ochi Gallery\, Los Angeles\, CA and Resort Gallery\, Baltimore\, MD. \nColby Caldwell tests avenues of photography as an instrument of memory. His recent work deconstructs the very elements of digital photography by abandoning the traditional matte and frame. Caldwell utilizes direct scans from nature\, producing large scale images before mounting his photographs on wood forms\, waxing the surface.  The pieces are untamed and evoke the scale and presence of paintings. Caldwell’s work is included in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, TX\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, Washington\, DC and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, New Orleans\, LA among others. Caldwell received his BFA from the Corcoran College of Art + Design in 1990 and lives and works in Asheville\, NC. \nRandy Shull lives in Merida\, Mexico through the winters\, inspired by the local and ancient use of hammocks at the core of life in the Yucatán.  He composes the hand-woven hammocks on the roof of his studio\, where they are painted and left to cure in the hot tropical sun. Hammocks cast the body into a sense of weightlessness offering an essential utility and a dream-state.  Shull’s paintings capture fluid motion and the rare life in Merida.  Shull received his BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1986. His work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum\, Brooklyn\, NY\, The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA and the Museum of Art and Design\, New York\, NY among others. \n  \n         \nRS                                                        CC                                                 SB \n  \nHEMPHILL opened in September 1993 and has since presented over 250 solo and group exhibitions in gallery spaces throughout Washington\, DC and\, since 2019\, in DC’s Mt Vernon Triangle location. DESCRIPTION:Join HEMPHILL on Tuesday\, May 21\, 2024\, for a book signing with photographer\, Janet Fries. \nABOUT JANET FRIES: \nContemporary society sees itself in the pictures of those gaining and retaining fame. Images of the famous and the infamous shape the way we see the past. Winston Churchill’s often-attributed quote\, “The victors write history\,” is no longer entirely true. The power of the famous is now measured in the frequency with which we see their image\, regardless of whether their actions were good\, evil\, or banal. Photography and all its tributary mediums\, for better or worse\, are part of how we illustrate the stories we tell and represent the kind of people we wish to be or want to avoid. We did not step into the current dynamic between image and power unconsciously. Media fame has been building and evolving for centuries\, but there has never been such an intrusive and instrumental use of photographic portraiture to sustain power as that which we experience today. \nJanet Fries’ photographic portraits\, shot on assignment for printed magazine publications between 1973 and 1991\, were part of a swelling information wave just before the flood of shared cell phone photos\, blog postings\, text messages\, influencers\, and social media stills and reels of today’s world. The nostalgic sensation of viewing the once fabulous and notorious captured by Fries kindles a fondness for the humanity of those pictured. Their visages are the content from a time before content would be entirely overwhelmed by the new speed and energy of today’s frenzied media. \nMany of Fries’ subjects have passed on; some are still alive. Collectively\, they hold a place in time\, as they are of an era before the peculiarities of the current information landscape. They possess personality\, regardless of their accomplishments. Together\, Fries’ portraits give us insight into how we defined a particular period and raise questions about how the current portrayal of the famous has changed us.

DESCRIPTION:March 16\, 2024-April 27th\, 2024 \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT: The differentiation of visual artwork as abstract or representational stubbornly persists. Similar to the artificial divide between the conceptual and the beautiful. These have become tired and tedious arguments. Nevertheless\, these designations resist dissolving one into the other. But are we not able to see both ways simultaneously? Is not every artwork both? Rather than looking at the history of Modernism through the pedagogical logic of -isms\, we could see the modern art history of these opposing positions as one mutually continuous effort. This way of seeing art is more natural to the contemporary viewer than the clever after-the-fact breakthrough following an explanation. Interpreting a painting is feeling a painting; feeling a painting is inseparable from interpreting a painting — duh. \nA few years ago\, Cushner sat on a beach\, notebook in hand\, and his mind wandered. He looked out at the skyscape above the ocean and wondered about the majestic\, moody\, threatening\, light-reflecting\, color-capturing\, and soon-to-evaporate. He asked himself\, “What can I do with this?” Merging the abstract and representational without argument in a uniquely unpretentious way\, Cushner employed his now famous approach to painting\, answering the question he posed himself that day on the beach. \nSTEVEN CUSHNER consists of paintings and works on paper from 2022-2024.
