SUMMARY:Book Talk: Model Schools in the Model City
DESCRIPTION:Join the DC History Center and Charles Sumner School Museum and Archives for a book talk about the history of Black public education and school architecture in the nation’s capital. \nEducation is essential for social equality\, and Black Washingtonians recognize that for the American Dream to apply to them\, their children need a quality education. In Model Schools in the Model City: Race\, Planning\, and Education in the Nation’s Capital\, author Amber N. Wiley explains how DC school buildings became a physical realization of Black liberation\, agency\, and their right to exist as citizens of the United States. \nOn Thursday\, October 23\, join us at the DC History Center for Dr. Wiley’s first book talk in Washington\, DC\, moderated by Kimberly E. Springle\, Executive Director of the Charles Sumner School Museum and Archives.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Las Muertes Más Bellas del Mundo
DESCRIPTION:Join the DC History Center for a screening of the new documentary film: Las Muertes Más Bellas del Mundo\, followed by a discussion with the filmmakers. \nThe film shares the uniquely Salvadoran-Wachintonian identity and tells a story about their struggles and humanity through the eyes of artists who created art out of war. SUMMARY:Why You Should Care About DC Statehood
DESCRIPTION:If you’re paying attention in DC\, signs of the statehood movement are all around you. Driving through town\, you see license plates punctuated with “END TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.” Murals with “51ST” embossed across the diamond outline of the District loom large on brick buildings. T-shirts reading “DC STATEHOOD NOW” stand out in the crowd. But how would DC become a state\, and what would statehood mean for District residents? Who’s working to make this dream of justice a reality? \nJoin the DC History Center and NEWorks Productions on Friday\, July 21 for a screening of the award-winning\, one-hour documentary “Becoming Douglass Commonwealth.” After the film\, stick around for a one-time-only conversation with statehood advocates\, moderated by the film’s producer and director\, Nolan Williams Jr.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: When the Smoke Cleared
DESCRIPTION:The 1968 uprisings that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. remain a benchmark for activism and protest in Washington\, DC. Infamous for the sheer volume of property damage\, looting\, arrests\, and federal troop presence\, historian Kyla Sommers wants us to look at what came after. Join Sommers at the DC History Center on Thursday\, July 13 for a conversation about her recent publication with The Atlantic’s Vann R. Newkirk II. \n“When the Smoke Cleared” tells the story of the Washingtonians who seized the moment to rebuild a more just society—one that would protect and foster Black political and economic power. But as the story of the local city goes: DC’s progressive ambitions were met with federal fallout\, squashing dreams of urban reimagination and self-governance. Sommers connects the 1968 uprisings to the rise of the modern carceral state under Nixon’s administration. \nCopies of When the Smoke Cleared will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
