SUMMARY:HumanitiesDC Culture Series: Transgender Histories with Darby Hickey
DESCRIPTION:How have the changes in D.C. over the past several decades been experienced and influenced by transgender individuals and communities? In 2021\, Darby Hickey with support from the DC Oral History Collaborative sought to explore this question through an oral history project featuring the voices of those who witnessed the transformation of the city firsthand. She interviewed eight transgender elders in D.C.\, mostly Black women\, to document their life stories and perspectives of the past 60 years. \nIn this next HumanitiesDC Culture Series event\, Darby Hickey\, along with project assistant Tessa Jelani\, and a panel of the narrators (interviewees) will discuss the journey\, the motivations\, the importance\, and the themes of this collaboration\, accompanied by selected clips from their full interviews (available in the People’s Archive at the DC Public Library). Panelists will also discuss the stories they contributed\, share what it meant to be interviewed\, and reflect on the history they have made. Come for stories about legendary nightclubs of yesteryear\, resilience and organizing in the face of violence and hate\, the importance of roller-skating\, and the power of family whether chosen or blood. \nWe’ll conclude the program by turning to the audience\, inviting folks to either ask questions or share their own experiences relevant to the topic.
