Plaza West Gift Drive Donation Continues

MVT CID is once again partnering with Plaza West – an innovative affordable housing development in our community that serves grandparents raising grandkids – to bring joy to the life of a deserving child and their caretaking grandparent during this holiday season of giving. Due to last year’s overwhelming support, this year we’re also including the gift wishes of grandparents as well.

We’d like to give a special shout-out to Holly Moskerintz – now donating for a second straight year – for being this year’s first donor. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!

Plaza West is a unique development that has 50 units for head of households age 50 and older who have legal custody/guardianship of at least one minor child. It is just one of a handful of such projects across the country and is the only project of its type in Washington, DC. Below is a demographic profile of the “grandfamilies” residing at at the property:

  • 68 youth between the ages of infant to 18 years old:
    • 0-5: 7
    • 6-12: 29
    • 13-18: 32
  • All residents identify as African American/Black
  • Average household income: $23,000/year
  • Average household composition: three people per household
  • 40% of grandparents are age 65 or older
  • All but three of the apartments have a single grandmother raising a minor child
