What You Need to Know Before Next Week’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit

From Tuesday, December 13 through Thursday, December 15, President Biden will convene more than 40 African presidents, dignitaries and leaders at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. While road closures within MVT CID are limited to properties along our western-most boundaries, security preparations within the broader area are well underway. Below is important information you should know as the Summit approaches to help make your travel in and around the Triangle during this time as smooth as possible:

  • Anticipate significant security presence and traffic pattern changes before, during, and after the Leaders Summit.
  • Road closures will start as early as Sunday, December 11.
  • The Mt Vernon Square-Convention Center Metro Station will be closed starting 5pm on Monday, December 12 through 12:01am on Friday, December 16.
  • Multiple buses will detour starting Saturday, December 10 at 5am until Saturday, December 17 at 12:01 a.m. Routes affected include 63, 64, 70, 74, 79, D4, G8 & S2.
