DDOT & MVT CID Partner to Enhance Alley Safety

As Mount Vernon Triangle has grown denser and more populated, so has the amount of foot, bicycle and motorized traffic through our alleys. As a result, underutilized infrastructure historically perceived as unsafe and unsanitary places that are best avoided have been transformed into viable travel alternatives for pedestrians and vehicles alike.
In response to MVT advocacy for enhanced pedestrian safety improvements throughout some of our most heavily traveled alleys, the District Department of Transportation recently painted stop bar pavement markings at the following three locations:
- Alley connecting the 800 block of 3rd & 4th Streets NW
- Alley connecting the 400 block of I (“Eye”) & K Streets NW
- Alley connecting the 600 block of K Street NW & New York Avenue NW
This partnership is one example of recent efforts to enhance the safety of pedestrians in and around MVT CID, which have also included:
- a DDOT-led “High Crash Site Visit” in June 2017 to identify engineering, enforcement and education issues that can improve pedestrian, bicyclist and motorist safety at 7th & K Streets NW as well as 7th Street NW & Massachusetts Avenue NW; and
- completion of the 4-1/2 & K streets NW mid-block crossing in November 2017 through the partnership efforts of the Office of Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, DDOT, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6E and the MVT CID.
