MVT CID Safety Council Marks One-Year Anniversary with Positive Results

Saturday February 10, 2018

Consistent with our clean and safe mission, the MVT CID launched the Safety Council in January 2017 in response to concerns expressed regarding safety and security within the Mount Vernon Triangle community. Crafted as a partnership among area property managers and retailers, Federal and local officials, and the MVT CID, the Safety Council was designed to create channels for direct communication with law enforcement, share best practices for neighborhood safety among property managers and retailers, and achieve the tangible goal of increasing public safety within the MVT CID.

With January 2018 marking the Safety Council’s one-year anniversary, the MVT CID analyzed crime reporting data over periods covering 30, 60, 90, 180, 270 and 365 days, and compared these results with the same period one year prior. The results showed an overall reduction in the number of reported incidents between the 2017 and 2018 comparison periods, with decreases ranging from 35% to 81% during that 12-month timeframe. This marks a significant improvement compared to the 12 months prior, which experienced 21% to 262% increases in the number of incidents reported. These results mirror similar trends in enhanced public safety experienced across the District.

Ensuring that everyone feels safe and supported in our community remains our number one priority. The MVT CID extends its gratitude to the officers of the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District, the officers of the United States Park Police’s Central District, the National Park Service, and the United States Attorney’s Office for their tireless contributions toward helping us achieve these results on behalf of our stakeholders and community.
