Rev. Dr. T. Ashby Banister Installed as 12th Senior Pastor of Mount Carmel Baptist Church
Thursday October 23, 2025

The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVT CID) congratulates the Rev. Dr. T. Ashby Banister on his installment as the 12th Senior Pastor of Mount Carmel Baptist Church! Established just after the Civil War in 1876, Mount Carmel is one of three historically significant churches that have provided 425 years of continuous spiritual and civic service to our Mount Vernon Triangle community and the District of Columbia.
Mount Carmel’s rich and storied history includes the contributions of legendary leaders such as William Henry Jernagin, who served as pastor from 1912-1948, was known as a forceful advocate for social change, and whose death was recognized by many including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and Rev. Dr. Joseph Evans, a former MVT CID Board Chair who was instrumental in development of the Liberty Place 71-unit affordable residence in partnership with The Wilkes Company & Quadrangle Development Corporation, ensuring the availability of more affordable housing in our Mount Vernon Triangle community that is accessible to all Washingtonians. Dr. Evans is now the J. Alfred Smith Sr. Professor of Theology in the Public Square at University of California-Berkeley School of Theology where he is also Endowed Chair and serves as Director of its Center for Truth, Racial Healing, and Restorative Justice.
MVT CID President & CEO Kenyattah Robinson was invited to share a celebration greeting in both the Installation Celebration Booklet and in-person (photo) at the ceremony on Saturday, October 11.
MVT CID is proud to have a storied institution like Mount Carmel in our neighborhood, and we warmly welcome Pastor Banister and his family to our Mount Vernon Triangle community.
