The Washington Post Includes Bar Chinois in its List of Best Dumplings!
Thursday September 24, 2026
Many denizens of the Triangle already know the half off drinks and dollar dumpling deal during happy hour at Bar Chinois are a slam “dump” for savory savings, but The Washington Post just made it official by including it as one of four stops in its “Best Dumplings in D.C. Itinerary”
Read an excerpt of the Bar Chinois review below, see what other dumpling shops in DC, Maryland, and Virginia made the list at washingtonpost.com, and plan to stop into Bar Chinois located at 455 I Street NW any day to try the selection for yourself!
There’s no stopping the parade of stainless steel steamer baskets during happy hour at this Mount Vernon Triangle hangout. With $1 dumplings on special (minimum of four per order; your choice of pork, chicken or vegetarian), folks fill up the bar, camp out in the main dining room and spill out onto the patio to stretch their hard-earned dining dollars.
While the discounted dumplings are tasty with tender wrappers and flavorful fillings, I suggest reinvesting the savings on the house gyoza. Each bronzed purse is pleasantly chunky, the deep-fried dough crimped around saucy beef. Melted Swiss and Gruyere cheeses and an herb-spiked aioli flood the zone with creaminess, and pickled red onions lend some tang. But the hearty, terrific meat is what makes these some of the most flavorful dumplings in town.
And mark your calendars! Next Friday, October 2, Bar Chinois turns five and wants to celebrate with you! The team has invited seven guest bartenders, including former Bar Chinois star Jake Simpson, to craft signature cocktails that they’ll be pouring from 9pm-2am.
