Walker-Jones Education Campus a Hub for Community Engagement

Sunday August 10, 2014

The Walker-Jones Education Campus has been a focal point this summer for volunteering and community service. On June 27th, volunteers from AAMC (shown at left) spent the day tending to the health and nutrition educational garden and on July 21st, President Obama visited Walker-Jones to support the My Brother’s Keeper program. Also, the Grassroots Education Project celebrated the completion of the first year of literacy tutoring to 54 students on Saturday mornings via the Reading All-Stars program. Since January, neighborhood tutors have logged more than 900 volunteer hours. Students who participated in the program regularly saw 20% more growth in reading than other students. You can sign up to help with the Reading All-Stars program here.

Interested in getting involved with the next project? On August 23rd, you can volunteer to participate in DC Public School Beautification Day at Walker-Jones! Sign up to help with Beautification Day here.
