Black History Celebration Slam!

poetry slam is a high-energy, competitive event where poets perform original work and are judged by audience-selected judges. Poets bring the heat with powerful words, and the crowd helps decide the winner!

SLAM DETAILS

 Two rounds of spoken word intensity—audience picks the winner!
 1st Place Winner Takes ALL: $100 CASH PRIZE
 $5 + tax & fees online | $8 (tax & fees included) at the door

SLAM RULES

✅ Poets must check in 30 minutes before the show for random slot selection.
✅ All poems must be original works.
✅ 3-minute 30-second time limit (with a 10-second grace period). Going over? Point deductions apply!
❌ No props, costumes, or musical instruments (including removing clothing).
❌ Poems must be performed solo.
Poets can read from paper or electronic devices (as long as they’re not used as props).
 After Round 1, six competitors will be eliminated!

You can’t have a conversation with Malachi Byrd without hearing about Washington, D.C. A poet, author, teacher, and arts advocate, Malachi believes in the transformative power of creative writing. A graduate of Princeton University with a degree in African-American Studies, he earned the name “MalPractice” for always staying sharp in his craft. Whether rapping, performing, or embracing the community, Malachi is a force in D.C.’s spoken word scene. He often asks:

“If art has healing properties, why not use them?”
