MVT Art Event: MVT Event: Does the “Public” Have a Role in Public Art?

As part of our Perspectives series of public programming inspired by the installation of One by Hiroshi Jacobs, the MVT CID invites you to join us for thought-provoking conversation on the public’s role in public art on Tuesday, February 4 from 7-9 PM at A Baked Joint.

When we put art into public spaces, whether in a museum or a sidewalk, we open up the conversation to a diversity of opinions and interpretations. Every person connects with art differently, especially when we feel like it belongs to us due to its presence in the public realm. How does art in public space change our perception and interpretation of it? What obligation does the artist have to the public when creating art for the public? What is art’s responsibility – if any – in inspiring social change?

Join us for stimulating conversation and perspective sharing on these and related questions with the following expert panelists:

  • George Hemphill, owner of Hemphill Fine Arts in Mount Vernon Triangle;
  • Hiroshi Jacobs, artist and creator of the One public art sculptures in Mount Vernon Triangle;
  • Rose Jaffe, renowned local artist and muralist; and
  • Philippa Hughes, social sculptor and event moderator.

Light bites and beverages will be provided, and a cash bar is available. Admission is free but please kindly RSVP by Thursday, January 30.
