United States Park Police Welcomes Candidates for Citizen’s Academy

The United States Park Police (USPP) is responsible for ensuring public safety at the five National Park Service federal greenspace reservations within the MVT CID. Beginning Wednesday, September 20, this key partner will once again offer their Citizen’s Academy on the topics of understanding crime prevention and police operations on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 PM at 1901 Anacostia Drive SW in Washington, DC. This nine-week course is offered by USPP’s Training Branch and is open to anyone who:

  • is a U.S. citizen 18 years of age or older;
  • lives or works in the National Capital Region, or is the parent, partner or spouse of an employee of the United States Park Police and the National Park Service; and
  • passes a background check.

In addition to hearing investigators, trainers, station commanders and officers explain the USPP organization and police procedures, attendees will also observe what it is like to be a USPP officer. Topics will include use of force, investigations, Special Forces operations, radio communications, emergency response and much more. Students must attend a minimum of seven of the nine sessions to receive a completion certificate.

USPP seeks to serve those from a wide variety of backgrounds when selecting participants in its Citizen’s Academy classes. They seek candidates of different ethnicities, professions, cultural backgrounds, orientations, age groups and neighborhoods throughout the National Capital Region in order to enrich classroom discussion and engage as many communities as possible. The academy’s goals are to educate the public about the role of the USPP while opening better lines of communication between the USPP and the community, and establishing cooperative relationships with the communities they serve.
