2fifty Texas BBQ’s Whole Hog Sandwich Named One of “40 Essential Dishes of D.C.” by The Washington Post!

Tuesday September 8, 2026

In a recent articleWashington Post staffers set out to collect the 40 most essential DC dishes right now. This effort was last engaged in 2017, so a refresh was certainly needed. Of the top 40, we’re proud to say Mount Vernon Triangle was represented by 2fifty Texas BBQ making the list with their interpretation of a Carolina whole-hog barbecue. Read the excerpt below, and congrats again to Fernando, Debby, and the whole 2fifty crew:

The owners of 2Fifty in Riverdale Park, Maryland, made their bones by filtering the Central Texas smokehouse experience through their own Salvadoran sensibilities. But when Debby Portillo González and Fernando González opened a second location in Washington in 2024, they decided to try their hand at whole-hog barbecue, the pride and joy of the Carolinas. To construct the sandwich, the 2Fifty pit crew starts by smoking a 60-pound (or larger) suckling pig. They’ll mix together meat pulled from multiple sections of the finished pig, adding a custom seasoning blend and an apple cider vinegar-laced sauce to the tangled mass. The final grace note is a sprinkling of pig skin, fried and pulverized, to add crackle to the bite. You can order this beast with or without coleslaw. It’s probably better without, so you can truly appreciate the subtle variations of pork inside this succulent sandwich. (Incidentally, it is also available as an occasional special at the Maryland location.)
