BlackHair Outdoor Exhibit Launches at MVT Photo Walk!

Friday February 7, 2025

As we close out the first week of our annual celebration of Black History Month in Mount Vernon Triangle, we are thrilled to welcome BlackHair by Marvin Bowser to the MVT Photo Walk located on the 400 block of K Street NW and in Prather’s Alley. With photo backdrops ranging as near as Washington, DC’s Union Station and as distant as Nice, France, BlackHair reflects Bowser’s “love letter to Black people and Black culture.” The six-month process to create BlackHair started in February 2023, when more than 3,000 images were carefully curated into 41 images – 40 of which are featured in the MVT Photo Walk – that provide Bowser’s point-of-view on Black hair and by extension, Black culture.

Although this exhibit has previously toured around DC gallery spaces, this is the first time it is on view as an outdoor public activation. Reflecting on the change, Bowser stated: “I hadn’t envisioned BlackHair as a public art installation when I curated the collection; however, I’m delighted to have it accessible to everyone for their enjoyment.”

We encourage you to take a walk along the 400 Block of K Street and through Prather’s Alley this month to take in the vibrancy of these photos and reflect on the “Black joy, love, beauty, strength, resilience, expression, and fantasy” that Bowser seeks to convey with these images.
