Mayor Bowser Urges DC to, “Plan Ahead, Have Patience, Use Public Transport, and Sign Up for Alerts” Ahead of Fourth of July Weekend

Thursday July 2, 2026

DC is no stranger to hosting large-scale Independence Day celebrations, but this year’s events are sure to be one for the record books. For the first time, the fireworks show and lead-up events on the National Mall have been designated a National Special Security Event by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security — akin to the security levels seen during presidential inaugurations. This along with The Great American State Fair and a FIFA Fan Zone events occurring concurrently on the National Mall, a first-time fireworks display in Anacostia Park, and a Nationals game in Navy Yard, all make for a busy Saturday in the District! And while road closures won’t directly impact Mount Vernon Triangle, we wanted to share a few resources to help you stay prepared this weekend:

  • Text “DC250” to 888-777 to receive free text messages about this summer’s special events including real-time updates on weather conditions, road closures and more.
  • Sign up for AlertDC at Alert.DC.gov for general weather, road closure, and safety updates.
  • Read Mayor Bowser’s Fourth of July Public Safety Press Release for additional details on the events listed above.
  • Visit 250.dc.gov for information about traffic closures, prohibited items on the National Mall and maps showing recommended locations to view fireworks and flyovers.
  • Review traffic closure maps, below:
