MVT CID in Action: Traffic Interventions Comes to Square 451 Alley

Those familiar with the 600 block of K Street NW and in the adjacent alleyway that bisects Square 451, connecting New York Avenue NW to K Street NW, may be familiar with the frustrations caused by frequently stalled cars in the right of way. In 2024, MVT CID worked with Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6E to successfully advocate the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to convert this alleyway to a one-way southbound operation. Since implementation of the one-way conversion, however, challenges with congestion and traffic management in the alleyway continued to persist.

In response, MVT CID worked with, adjacent property owners AC Hotel and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) as well as DDOT partners to devise an alley enhancement plan that was public-privately funded through a reimbursable maintenance agreement between MVT CID and DDOT.

Enhancements installed last week include:

flex posts to narrow the alleyway where it intersects K Street NW,
a painted arrow indicating the direction of travel,
speed deterring devices along the ground plane, and
no parking signs along the ground plane of the adjacent buildings.

Through projects like this, MVT CID is able to enact meaningful change for the neighborhood by timely and responsively injecting District resources directly into our community.
