New COVID-19 Guidelines Released by Mayor Bowser & CDC

Friday April 30, 2021

As vaccinations continue and the number of COVID-19 cases decrease, both the District of Columbia and Federal government announced plans to loosen business and gatheing restrictions both locally and nationally. During a press conference earlier this week, Mayor Bowser announced an easing of the following restrictions starting tomorrow, May 1:

  • Gyms and fitness centers can operate at 50% capacity.
  • Live music will be permitted in gardens and outdoor spaces.
  • Restaurants can seat 10 people per table outdoors, up from the previous limit of six per table.
  • Retail businesses can increase admittance from 25% capacity to 50% capacity.
  • Houses of worship can increase to 40% capacity, although participants are still encouraged to attend virtual or outdoor services.
  • Entertainment venues like concert halls and movie theaters can open at 25% capacity.
  • Public and private pools can open at 50% capacity.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also eased guidelines regarding the wearing of masks outdoors, stating Americans who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear a mask outdoors while walking, running, hiking or biking alone, or when in small gatherings. Masks are still necessary in crowded outdoor venues like sports stadiums or while attending concerts. Please refer to the chart below distributed by the CDC on the latest mask-wearing guidance.
