Partnership Leads to 4-1/2 & K Streets Mid-Block Crossing

As Mount Vernon Triangle’s reputation as a “destination of choice” known for being a great place to live, work, do business and entertain continues to grow, so has the need to ensure pedestrian safety for the 6,000 residents, 8,500 professionals and countless other business owners and visitors who travel through our neighborhood. And with the recent completion of the 4-1/2 K Street mid-block crossing, pedestrian safety in MVT has taken a giant step forward!
The project follows years of stakeholder advocacy by the MVT CID that included partnership with Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). With multiple new high-rise buildings and businesses, pedestrian traffic has increased dramatically on the 400 block of K Street NW. Pedestrians routinely cross mid-block due to the length of this “superblock,” creating a dangerous situation for both pedestrians and drivers.
The MVT CID prepared multiple reports containing pedestrian count studies to support the need for a mid-block crossing, and Councilmember Allen’s letter to DDOT in August 2016 created the positive momentum that led ultimately to the project’s consideration, approval and execution.
Even with this significant enhancement to pedestrian safety, crosswalk users must still do their part. That’s why the MVT CID reminds all pedestrians to:
- always look both ways before crossing the street,
- always yield to motor vehicles when crossing mid-block, and
- never walk while distracted by cell phones or other electronic devices.
