Relax and Enjoy the…Parking Space, as Mount Vernon Triangle Businesses Welcome Residents and Visitors to Three Neighborhood Parklets in Washington, DC

Tuesday September 13, 2016

On Friday, September 16th, three Mount Vernon Triangle retailers will be transforming the parking spaces at their front doors into a welcoming courtyard to sit, visit and relax with friends as part of 2016 PARK(ing) Day in Washington, DC. Each year, working in conjunction with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), DC businesses put their creativity on display, building pop-up parks and living rooms in curbside parking spaces. Brighten your day by visiting the following businesses between 9 AM and 4 PM:

  • 5th Street Ace Hardware (1055 5th Street, NW at City Vista): Visit 5th Street Ace Hardware and enjoy an outdoor patio with AstroTurf flooring, a picnic table, music and board games, as you lounge, eat lunch, read a book or simply rest your feet and talk to neighbors.
  • 450K Street Apartments: Stop in with your four-legged best friend and enjoy some café seating and a spot for your dog to play as well. Free treats for humans and canines.
  • Silo Restaurant (919 5th Street, NW): Neighbors are welcomed to stop in to a patio decorated by potted flowers and have some fun playing corn hole at one of Mount Vernon Triangle’s best-loved neighborhood restaurants.

Initially created by the San Francisco design studio Rebar, PARK(ing) Day is an event in which residents and businesses re-think how we use public space by converting metered on-street parking spaces into temporary parks. Since its inception in 2005, the event has spread to cities around the world, taking place on the third Friday of September.
