In Memoriam: Sam Wilkerson

Friday March 14, 2025

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we write of the passing of beloved Clean Team member Samuel Wilkerson. Sam was a valued long-time member of our team whose kind and generous soul continuously uplifted the spirits not only of the MVT CID staff and Clean Team colleagues, but also the days and lives of so many of our community members.

Since becoming a MVT CID Clean Team Ambassador in 2015, Sam could often be seen pushing his bucket along the 400 Blocks of K & L Streets NW, occasionally stopping to say hi to one of his many favorite neighborhood dogs (like Parker, pictured right) or sharing with you his latest Dallas Cowboys predictions. He could always be relied upon to assist with events and diligently put out tables and chairs for our weekly Saturday farmers market, always ensured that the dog bowls were filled with plenty of treats and water ahead of our Tunes in the Triangle series, and amiably folded turf and moved tents – sometimes even after wiping away a tear after a particularly poignant Movies in Milian film. Sam was proud of his work and carefully displayed the numerous awards and accolades he had received over the years on his desk next to the many cards and mementos grateful community members had gifted him.

A proud uncle, Sam never missed his nephew’s football games and was always sure to request off the day after Thanksgiving so that he could watch him and the rest of the H. D. Woodson Warriors take on Dunbar in the annual Turkey Bowl.

Sam was a gentle presence who was loved by many and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

In honor of his memory, the MVT Community Foundation has established the “Sam Wilkerson Memorial Fund” that will be used to remember Sam through the future dedication of a bench or tree in Cobb Park. If you wish to donate, please click the link below.
