Top MVT Medical Associations Team Up for Community Service on AAMC Cares Day
Thursday June 16, 2016
On May 19, more than 140 staff who work within the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) building at 655 K Street—including from AAMC, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA)—dispersed to 19 service projects across 14 sites around the Mount Vernon Triangle and neighboring communities, as part of AAMC Cares Day, the AAMC’s flagship day of service. With a focus on continuing partnerships in service and extending relationships built through the Community Grants Program, projects were identified that both align with the AAMC’s mission of improving the health of all and address ongoing needs in the community. Thanks to its partners, the volunteers:
- sorted donations for Bread for the City’s Clothing Room Program;
- managed donations at Capital Area Food Bank;
- maintained Central Union Mission’s mens’ shelter and supported their food bank activities;
- packaged and delivered food for those less fortunate through Food & Friends;
- volunteered with the Friends and Neighbors Breakfast through Friendship Place;
- engaged in facility maintenance at HIPS;
- engaged with residents at Joseph’s House;
- created posters and pamphlets for La Clinica del Pueblo;
- worked the produce market as part of the Heathy Start program through Martha’s Table;
- engaged with students in STEM activities at Howard University Middle School;
- prepared meals through So Others Might Eat and Miriam’s Kitchen;
- created dozens of animal toys (and read to a couple of cats) at Washington Animal Rescue League; and
- helped beautify the Washington Youth Garden.
This banner event has always been a jewel in the AAMC’s portfolio of community engagement activities, as well as a unique opportunity for staff to engage with each other in a fun and meaningful way outside the office. Photos from the day’s activities can be found here.
